Providing unusual and inexpensive sgians to kilt wearers
Kilt wearers (kilties) are a diverse lot. While united by a common garment, the kilt, they pride themselves in wearing accessories that define
their own unique tastes.
This was the germ on an idea to create unique, yet inexpensive sgian dubhs. There are many fine manufacturers of extraordinary sgians that are
nothing short of works of art. Often is the case though, these carry a mighty dear price, and justifiably so.
My desire is to provide a selection of sgians that kilties find attractive, unusual, and affordable - something they enjoy wearing and displaying to
their colleagues.
No two items from Tennesse Sgians are exactly the same because each knife is cast on demand, not on an assembly line. Color lots naturally vary
and there is an infinite number of combinations of color and texture.
According to popular belief, the sgian dubh may have evolved from the sgian achlais, a dagger that was concealed under the armpit. Used by
Scots of the 17th-18th centuries, this knife was a bit larger than the typical modern sgian dubh and was carried in the upper sleeve or lining
of the body of the jacket.
Etiquette of that time period insisted that upon entering the home of a friend, any concealed weapons would be made known. It follows that the
sgian achlais would be removed from its hiding-place and displayed in the hose top.
